A technology-based learning management system is commonplace at higher education institutions. One technology gaining popularity is the CANVAS learning management system. Most institutions use their LMS for organizing course materials, communicating with students, and reporting course grades. Often, institutions are not using the assessment component of the LMS to its fullest capacity. Beyond its capacity to create and score individual course assignments for the gradebook, the assessment component is a powerful mechanism to disaggregate scores or proficiencies by course, program, and institutional outcomes collected directly from the source where achievement is scored. When an automated data-collection process is employed, faculty can gain information on student achievement and individual challenges with greater specificity than can be understood from course grades or GPA. This webinar is a step-by-step workshop that will guide participants to (a) understand the assessment capacities embedded in CANVAS; (b) learn how to set-up outcomes and assessable component learning criteria; (c) align assessable criteria from course, program, or institutional level to assignments; (d) develop scoring measures; and (e) identify techniques for extracting and reporting data from course, program, and institutional levels.. Strategies that have been shown to be effective in collaborative data analysis in programs and across the institution will be shared. The session will include examples of program enhancements that have been a result of programs across the institution.

Dr. Frederick Burrack is Director of Assessment, Distinguished Graduate Faculty. He has served as the Chair for the National Association for Music Education Assessment Special Research Interest Group and as Co-Chair for their work in developing Model Cornerstone Assessments that accompany the National K-12 Music Standards. His co-edited book “Applying Model Cornerstone Assessments in K–12 Music: A research supported approach” was published in 2018. A new text for assessing music "Developing and Applying Assessments in the Music Classroom." Routledge, Pub was published in 2020 with co-authors Dr. Kelly Parkes, Dr. Phillip Payne, and Dr. Brian Wesolowski.
