Powerpoints and conference presentations are often complemented by use of images or other media, and the academic content of a paper may draw from existing scholarly sources. In the traditional, in-person conference meeting room, the use of other rightsholders’ content is relatively risk-free but things change when academic conferences move online, as is increasingly the case today in the lamentable age of COVID-19. In this webinar, two librarians from JMU Libraries’ Scholarly Communication Unit share thoughts, ideas, and tips about staying on the right side of copyright law when presenting and disseminating scholarship.

Presenters:

Howard S. Carrier, Copyright Librarian, is an Associate Professor at James Madison University and holds Masters’ degrees in Law and Library Science. His work involves advising and educating members of the JMU community about the lawful use of copyrighted material in teaching and scholarship. He serves as the Chair of JMU’s Intellectual Property Committee. His particular interests in the area of copyright and librarianship include the Doctrine of Fair Use and the TEACH Act. Howard is the Associate Editor of the International Journal on Responsibility, an open access journal published by JMU’s Gandhi Center, hosted at JMU Libraries’ Scholarly Commons.

Liz Thompson, Open Education Librarian, is an Associate Professor at James Madison University and holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. She promotes open and affordable course materials across JMU and Virginia. She is an Open Education Network campus leader, was a 2017-2018 OER Research Fellow, and was co-Principal Investigator on the Institute of Museum and Library Services grant (Supporting OA Collections in the Open: community requirements and principles). Liz also serves on VIVA’s Open and Affordable Course Content Committee and SCHEV’s Open Virginia Advisory Council. Her other research interests include instructional design and information literacy.
