The Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (AALHE) Conference Committee welcomes your proposal(s) to facilitate a session(s) during the 2017 Annual Conference. The following information will guide you in the successful completion and submission of your proposal.

Models of learning assessment in higher education.
Sessions with this focus present relevant information about evidence-based models for the ethical and effective practice of learning assessment in higher education. For example, facilitators can engage participants in

• learning relevant skills in the design and implementation of higher learning assessment models.
• learning relevant skills in the use of common processes and tools in the field of higher learning assessment.
• exploring their own practice.

Research on learning assessment in higher education.
Sessions with this focus present research in fields and disciplines that is relevant to understanding higher education learning assessment. For example, facilitators can engage participants in

• exploring relevant research on learning, assessment and evaluation in higher education.
• learning from presentations of current research in the field of higher education learning assessment.
• learning relevant skills in the use of common methods and tools to conduct research on higher education learning assessment.

Emerging questions, promising practice in learning assessment in higher education.
For example, facilitators can engage participants in

• contributing to dialogue on emerging questions, issues, concepts, and theories in the field of higher learning assessment.
• evaluation of research on the impact of assessment on patterns or cycles of disruption and innovation in higher education.
• presentations of emerging, innovative and exemplary models and trends in higher education learning assessment.

Abstract. (max=150 words)

A description of the session’s purpose, specific focus, intended audience, and planned engagement of participants in learning through your session. (This will appear in the Conference Program.)

Focus Description and Audience. (max=300 words)

Provide a succinct explanation of the focus of your proposed session, with evidence to support your case that the proposed session is relevant, timely, and likely to contribute to developing knowledge and understanding in the field of higher learning assessment. (B) Identify the intended audience of learners who will most benefit from the session.

Submission Type (select one)

Interactive presentation of research or practice (60 minutes). The presenter(s) describes research or practice and must also build in a significant interactive experience with the participants.

Showcase presentation (30 minutes). An opportunity for the presenter(s) to showcase research, an idea, or a practice.

Panel session (60 minutes). Panel conversations are facilitated by a moderator and consist of 3-5 experts on the topic.  Panelists briefly share thoughts on the topic, and the majority of the hour is spent in conversation with the panelists and the audience.

Dialogue or skill-building session (90 minutes). These 90-minute sessions allow for the participants to gain a deeper understanding of a particular topic that is shared by the presenter. While there is some level of expectation for the engagement of the participants, the focus of the session is to allow a more full explanation and experience for the participant.

Poster presentation (60 minutes). The presenter(s) creates a visual display in the form of a poster and during a time slot in the conference, all those presenting posters will have the opportunity to appear with their posters and informally interact with participants.

Roundtable discussion (60 minutes). A focused discussions with participants seated around a table. Roundtable presentations typically include short (more informal) presentation, followed by discussion and feedback. Roundtable presenters should bring targeted questions to pose to others at the table in order to learn from and with those attending. Roundtables are an ideal format for networking and in-depth discussion on a particular topic.

At least two reviewers will use a rubric based on the submission type to evaluate each proposal.

Learning Outcomes. (max=300 words)

Identify and clearly describe your intended learning outcomes. If you are proposing a skill-building session, describe how you will assess learning outcomes.

Strategy for Engaging Conference Participants. (max=400 words)

Describe, in detail, your strategy for engaging participants in learning through the session.

Describe the organization of the session, the proposed timeline, the proposed activities, and session evaluation (if applicable).

Tip for poster proposers: Describe how your poster’s design will catch people’s attention and explain how your elevator speech will entice people to stop and talk with you.

Supporting Media. (max=250 words)

Clearly describe the media you will use to support the sharing of information and participant engagement. If possible, provide electronic versions of handouts, the presentation, and other learning-support media in an appendix.

Qualifications of Facilitators. (max=250 words per person)

Provide an explanation of the relationship between the expertise and experience of the facilitator(s) and the content and focus of the proposed session. Expertise and experience should align with the focus, and be of sufficient breadth, depth and quality to assure conference participants will be learning from highly-qualified facilitators.
